Zebra Proyekt

A dance workshop for all those interested in developing their personal movement and composition tools. Each participant will work with the particular movements and idiosyncrasies of their body, so the work is open to persons with diverse training backgrounds, experiences and physical abilities.

Our raw material will be movements found in the city. We will use a sampling methodology to generate new movements using fundamental dance parameters: dynamics, fludity, rhythm, phrase, directions, levels and space.

We will work both individually and in groups, developing an expanded awareness between the individual and the ensemble and we will explore the possibilities of acting in unison, as echo, contrast or  support.

Background

In this workshop I share the way of experiencing the city that I have developed from my participation in p.u.r.e. (Performative Urban Research Ensemble) and the choreographic tools with which I made the pieces Zeitgenössischer Glanz (Berlin-2016, funded by the district of Pankow-Berlin) and GANG (Berlin-2017). Investigating what it is that turns movement into dance, I have worked with pedestrian movements, space and time patterns and states of energy and attention. I continued refining this research in Zeitgenössischer Glanz – jetzt noch ergiebiger! (Berlin-2020).

My hypothesis is that dance is aesthetically motivated movement, either when being made or when being watched. One of my interests is emancipating movement from having to represent anything other than itself. In this sense, I am inspired by the work of postmodern choreographers working in New York in the 1960s: Simone Forti, Steve Paxton, Trisha Brown and Yvonne Rainer and also by William Forsythe’s Improvisation technologies.
